Adopting the “Capsule Wardrobe”: What is it?
We all know the world of Marie Kondo, the queen of tidying up par excellence.
Today I'm going to talk to you about another movement, the "Capsule Wardrobe" or capsule wardrobe for non-English speakers.
Who has never experienced that empty, haggard look when faced with a dressing room that is nevertheless full?
Feeling like you have nothing to wear, when your closets are overflowing with all kinds of clothes?
You should know that on average, throughout our lives these moments of our daily life represent 287 days of our life!! Yes, you read me correctly, 287 days is huge.
This capsule wardrobe movement therefore saves us from this precious time lost every morning.
In fact, this concept was introduced in the 70s by Susie Faux, and then taken up by Donna Karan in 1985 (the “7 Easy Pieces Collection”). It has recently become popular with many bloggers and influencers.
So that's all well and good, but what does it consist of?
The concept
The Wardrobe capsule focuses on the art of having a minimalist wardrobe.
A capsule is actually a small collection.
It's all about choosing several pieces, which you can combine with each other to create different outfits.
The dressing room is then built as a set of clothes and not piece by piece.
This saves time and money (because there is less need to make unnecessary purchases).
Of course we choose clothes that we like to wear, that suit us well.
There are different choices of possible pieces to select: some only choose 10 pieces to wear over 10 days (10×10 challenge) and others up to 37 for an entire season.
Of course, in this choice of pieces we do not count accessories such as jewelry, bags, scarves, shoes, coats. Really the clothes as such.
How can this be implemented in concrete terms?
- We are cleaning upin his wardrobe and sorting
We give away what we no longer wear to keep only what we love.
And no, we don't keep this cardigan just because it has sentimental value if we never wear it. We force ourselves and we do a real clean-up. (Easier said than done, I agree, I am the living proof, my wardrobe is still struggling to empty)
- We create our own clothing plan
We define the number of clothes and over what period of time we do it (7 days, 10 days, a whole season, etc.)
The choice of the number of clothes is up to everyone.
Choosing basic, neutral and bright colours is recommended to complement your outfits as best as possible.
Finally, we know our body shape to know what suits us and what doesn't.
- We choose basics that go well with everything.
For example, a little black dress, a blazer jacket, a white shirt etc.
These are safe values.
To find inspiration, I refer you to different boards on Pinterest

Or on Instagram:
and many other bloggers
or simply with the #capsulewardrobe , you will find plenty of inspiration 😉
Of course you can always go shopping (how can you deprive yourself of it at the same time 😉 but in these cases, we choose to do it only during seasonal changes. We take the opportunity to buy the little basics missing from our next capsule wardrobe. And be ready for the next season
Benefits of getting started:
- Save time
- Save money (less shopping) – Buying less means buying better
- Avoid decision fatigue and early morning headaches
- Avoid overconsumption and reduce our ecological footprint
Yes, we must not forget that the clothing industry is the second most polluting industry on the planet.
- Simplify your daily life
To your wardrobes 😉
