2024: Series & movies not to be missed

Due to the writers' and actors' strike, the catalog of series and film releases has been disrupted this year. Many have been postponed until next year. Enough to increase the excitement rate at the idea of discovering them. Here are the releases expected for 2024.

SERIES

The New Look – Apple TV – (Released 02/14)

Synopsis : In Paris, under Nazi occupation, Coco Chanel's reign over fashion is coming to an end. Christian Dior is now the rising star who is reviving the world with his revolutionary and iconic style, influencing generations of yesterday and today.

The ten episodes of this series created by Todd A Kessler, trace the rise of the designer during the Second World War.

Filmed entirely in Paris, the show looks back at the promising beginnings of Christian Dior (Ben Mendelsohn) in the context of the Nazi occupation. We will also find the contemporaries of the couturier. Among them Coco Chanel (aka our national Juliette Binoche), Cristobal Balenciaga and Pierre Balmain. 

Moreover, in 2024, no fewer than three series dedicated to haute couture designers will be on show: "The New Look" so, but also the mini-series “Kaiser Karl” airs on Disney+ which will retrace the life of Karl Lagerfeld. And still on Disney+, "Cristobal Balenciaga" which will pay tribute to the talent of the Spanish designer.

The Problem Has 3 Bodies – Netflix – (Released 03/21)

Synopsis : In 1960s China, a young woman makes a disastrous decision that will have repercussions across time and space that will affect a group of brilliant researchers in the world of today. As the laws of nature unravel before their eyes, five former colleagues reunite to face the greatest danger ever to threaten humanity.

This ambitious science fiction series is an adaptation of the work The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin (2014),

And watch out, it is performed by no less than David Benioff And DB Weiss, the creators of Game of Thrones.

We will also be able to find 3 former actors from the hit series there: Liam CunninghamJohn BradleyJonathan Pryce.

According to the show's creators, the story takes a hyper-realistic, science-based approach to answering the questions: "What would human contact with an alien species be like?" and "How alien is alien?"

House of Dragons Season 2 – HBO – (Release Early Summer 2024)

Synopsis : The story takes place approximately 100 years after the unification of the Seven Kingdoms by the Targaryen conquest. Nearly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen. The series depicts the events that led to the beginning of the decline of House Targaryen, in a devastating war of succession known as the " Dance of the dragons" .

The second season is expected to pick up where the first left off. The fratricidal war within the Targaryens is expected to rage after Lucerys' death, which Rhaenyra interpreted as an act of war.

A real hit since its launch at the end of summer 2022, House of Dragons has managed to impose its brand while remaining in the footsteps of its parent series, Game of Thrones. And for good reason, since George RR Martin himself participated in its creation with Ryan Condal.

Although no release date has been announced, the HBO boss has suggested that the series, which will consist of 8 episodes, will not return to screens before summer 2024.

You season 5 – Netflix – (Date to come)

Synopsis : After convincing himself that he was no longer a murderer since he decided to start over in London, Joe Goldberg, our favorite bookseller and stalker, finally realized that he suffered from dissociative identity disorder. Because of their similarities, Joe Goldberg had associated his murderous side with Rhys Montrose, a candidate for mayor of London. At the end of season 4, Joe Goldberg once again comes out of it wonderfully, accompanied by his new extremely powerful partner, Kate.

Information about the plot of this new season is not yet known.

For now, the precise release date of season 5 of You has not been communicated by Netflix. However, the streaming platform clarified on March 24, 2023 that The final episodes will be added to the catalog in 2024. The writers' and actors' strike has delayed the production of the series. It is therefore not known at this time when filming will begin.

MOVIES

The year 2024 is a year of all kinds of sequels. You will be able to find your favorite heroes, adventurers or superheroes through the following films.

Dune 2 – (Released 03/15)

Synopsis : Paul Atreides joins forces with Chani and the Fremen to lead a revolt against those who destroyed his family. Haunted by dark premonitions, he finds himself faced with the greatest dilemma of all: choosing between the love of his life and the fate of the universe.

Deadpool 3 – (Released 07/26)

Synopsis : Wolverine is recovering from his injuries when he crosses paths with the loudmouth, Deadpool, who has traveled back in time to heal him in hopes of becoming friends and teaming up to defeat a common enemy.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman return for a 3e opus.

Joker: Madness 2 – (Released 4/10)

Synopsis : Five years after the success of the first opus, Joaquin Phoenix will be back in the sequel Joker. A feature film with musical accents where Lady Gaga will be Harley Quinn.

But beware of the difference from the first one, it will be a musical film. Which did not fail to surprise the spectators.

Gladiator 2 – (Released 11/22)

Synopsis : The film focuses here on the story of Lucius, the son of Lucilla and nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). Lucius is very admiring of Maximus' journey and is expected to follow in his footsteps.

This cult film will therefore be entitled to a sequel, 24 years after its release. Ridley Scott is still behind the camera. And new headliners follow Russell Crowe: Pedro Pascal, Paul Mescal (in the title role), Denzel Washington and Connie Nielsen again in her role as Lucilla.

IF – (Released on 17/05)

Synopsis : A man discovers the incredible power to see and talk to imaginary friends. He thus befriends many people forgotten by their own loved ones. However, some of them turn to the dark side...

With a 4 star cast including: Ryan Reynolds, John Krasinski, Fiona Shaw, Cailey Fleming, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Steve Carell, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Maya Rudolph, Awkwafina

Inside Out 2 – (Released 06/19)

Synopsis : Freshly graduated, Riley is now a teenager. Which is not without triggering a major upheaval within the headquarters which must face something unexpected: the arrival of new emotions!

Inevitably, such upheavals in his life will not be without consequences on his emotions. Hence the thunderous arrival of Anxiety, but also potentially other new recruits.

With its universal and unifying subject, Vice Versa had managed to attract a large audience when it was released in 2015. The animated feature film had grossed nearly $858 million at the global box office.

This first part was directed by Pete Docter. Having become the big boss of Pixar in the meantime, he delegated the direction of this sequel to Kelsey Mann, whose first feature film it is. Even if it arrives nine years after the first film, this sequel remains a highly anticipated project.

Wicked Part 1 – (Released 11/27)

Synopsis : Long before Dorothy Gale arrives in Oz, Elphaba, a young woman born with emerald green skin, meets Glinda, a young blonde, bubbly and extremely popular woman. Although everything opposes them, they will become friends.

Fans of Broadway musicals, this movie is for you!

In fact, it is a two-part adaptation of the musical Wicked by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman. Launched in 2003 on Broadway, it is based on the novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by American author Gregory Maguire. Itself a rewriting of the history of Wizard of Oz by Lyman Frank Baum.

Alongside Ariana Grande, who is signing her first major film role, and Cynthia Erivo, a Broadway regular, we will find Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero and Michelle Yeoh in the role of Madame Morrible. 

Mufasa: The Lion King – (Released 12/18)

Synopsis : This film is presented in the form of flashbacks. Rafiki, Timon and Pumbaa tell a young lion cub the story and rise of one of the greatest kings that the Pride Lands have ever seen.

The prequel to the Lion King dedicated to Mufasa is directed by Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins (Moonlight). This feature-length film, which mixes live action and digital effects, looks back at the childhood of Simba's father.

30 years after the release of the classic cartoon in 1994, this prequel should raise the bar, particularly following the critical reception of the live action remake in 2019.

Ideal as a family outing for the end of year celebrations 🙂
