The grass is always greener on the other side. At first, I thought, "Yeah, well, that's a classic." But actually, no. The more I think about it, the more I realize it sums up very specific moments in life. Moments when you're not necessarily unhappy where you are... but when your brain still starts looking elsewhere. For no very clear reason. That moment when your life is okay... but your brain disagrees. There are periods when, objectively, things are fine. Not perfect, but okay. And yet, you can find yourself scrolling on your phone or thinking about something else, and saying something like, "Okay, but somewhere else, it must be simpler." Without even knowing exactly what "somewhere else" means. It could be another city, another country, another job, or even another version of your life. And what's strange is that it's not a decision. It's just a thought that pops up, almost automatically. What your brain chooses to see (and what it forgets). I've realized something quite specific. When I think about "elsewhere," my brain never takes the full picture of reality. It takes a kind of montage. For example, a new city becomes: But it completely forgets the rest. The paperwork. The fact that you don't know people. The somewhat empty days. The moments when you have to rebuild everything from scratch. It's as if the brain is doing a very selective filtering. It keeps the "great potential," it throws away the rest. And then it compares that to your real life. Naturally, that creates an imbalance. When does this really happen to me? I can see the situations where this syndrome is triggered quite clearly. When I'm looking for a job, for example. I can send in an application, then close my computer, and 10 minutes later I think to myself, "What if I'm not looking in the right place?" Or, "What if things are faster somewhere else?" Even though I have no proof of that. It's just a feeling. Or when I've just moved, like recently. There's a point where you're still settling in, where everything isn't quite in its place yet, and that's when your brain might start saying, "Yes, but maybe I would have already found my rhythm somewhere else." Even though I've literally just arrived. The tricky part of this mechanism is that what I find interesting (and a little annoying too) is that even when you change something, it doesn't stop. You change your situation → at first you're happy or motivated → then it becomes normal → and your brain starts looking elsewhere again. As if the feeling of "it could be better" never completely disappears. It just shifts its focus. For example, I sometimes look at job postings for cities, or jobs, or even completely different projects, and think to myself, "Things would surely flow more smoothly over there." Without even knowing what "flowing" actually means in the real world of those places. And after five minutes, I pull myself together and realize I'm comparing real life (my own, with all its concrete details) to an idea. An idea without constraints. So naturally, it wins. What I've gradually come to understand is that what I often confuse isn't "bad place" versus "good place." It's more subtle than that. It's more of a collection of small things that accumulate: And the brain, faced with all of this, looks for a simple explanation. A clear cause. Something to point the finger at. So it translates that into: "Maybe the problem is where I am." It makes sense, in a way. It's even reassuring. Because if the problem stems from the place, then the solution exists. You just have to leave. Except, no. Because mental fatigue travels with you. So does the lack of bearings. And this hazy period needs time to pass, no matter where you are. What took me a while to accept is that sometimes there's no problem to solve. No place to leave. No urgent decision to make. It's just a phase. And phases pass. Not because you change locations. But because time does its thing, you eventually find your bearings, and the haze dissipates on its own. And now, I recognize it a little better. I won't lie, it still happens. But I try to pinpoint the precise moment it starts. When I begin to idealize other places for no concrete reason. When everything suddenly seems simpler in an imaginary version. And often, just noticing it kind of ruins it. Not completely. But enough to bring us back to reality. The «grass is greener» syndrome, at its core, isn't some grand, complicated theory. It's simply that very human reflex to think that life would be a little easier elsewhere, especially when we're going through some difficult times. But in reality, elsewhere isn't an improved version of life. It's just another version. With its own easy moments and its own difficult moments.
